I wasn't certain, after... {checking, slightly relieved} Rex: Are you just going to ignore what happened back there? {concerned} Syndra: Zhiraok's blessing... it gives him the power to revive himself. It takes some time, though. {explaining} Syndra: If we wanted any chance to get away, I had to- I had to kill him. {explaining/grim} Syndra: Well, in any case, we're all here! We'll be meeting with my contact soon, after which we'll certainly be safe, but... {explaining} Syndra: We have some time to spare. You've had a few days to acclimate to the Roughworks - any thoughts? {curious} // It's very different to Auburn. Syndra: It is, isn't it? It's much busier, less open, and yet... it carries a certain nostalgia for me. {reminiscing} Rex: Nostalgic? This place, really? What's so nostalgic about loud factories and urban sprawl? {scoffing/disbelief} Syndra: ...ah. Nothing much, I suppose. {somber} Zeph: Well, I'm with Rex on th- this- this one! I wouldn't want to s- st- stay here for long, it's s- so... smoggy. {agreeing, explaining} Mora: Certainly, it is not as... clean, I suppose, as the Auburn Forest. The smell of the morning dew shall be sorely missed! {optimistic} Syndra: Alright, children, get it out of your system. Please refrain from speaking poorly of the Roughworks once we meet with my contact... I'd like to make a good first impression. {slightly disapproving} // I like it. Rex: Oh, you wouldn't think so if you actually had to live here. {scoffing} Syndra: Rex, please. Be polite. {stern} Rex: What?! Most of them would agree with me! {confident} Zeph: I think I'm with Rex on this- this one! I can't im-imagine- imagine living here, it's s- so... smoggy. {agreeing} Syndra: Alright, children, get it out of your system. Please refrain from speaking poorly of the Roughworks once we meet with my contact... no matter how much they may or may not agree. {slightly disapproving} Syndra: In any case, I was told to meet them in the city at noon - Timasca is usually empty during the daytime. {explaining} Zeph: What? It's empty during the day? Th- that doesn't make a lot of sense. {confused} Syndra: I'm afraid the lives of the citizens of the Roughworks revolve entirely around their work. The work day starts at sunrise, and ends with sunset. So, let's just wait... {explaining/serious} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rex: ...oh, where are they? {inquiring} Sui: Maybe they, um, just read time differently, here...? Or maybe we- {uncertain} Quill: Oho, Syndra! {friendly} Syndra: Hello, Quill. It's been a while since we've met face to face, hasn't it? {friendly} Quill: Indeed, indeed... I hope your journey to cross to the Roughworks wasn't too difficult. {friendly} Syndra: Could have been better, could have been worse. We expected difficulties going in. {casual} Quill: I see... You'll have to tell me more later. Now, which of you is the cursed one? I'd like a look at you. {thinking, interested} // That'd be me. Quill: Mmhm! So you're the one, eh? What I'd heard in correspondence had me thinking you'd be different than us. Seems like I was right! {interested} Quill: There's a look in your eyes, something to your gait. In all my years I've seen quite a lot, and everything that shouts ''promise'' is there in you. {explaining/thinking} // None of us are cursed, sir. Quill: Ha! Yes, yes, I suppose that would be the correct response to that question. You'd do well to stick to that script. {friendly} Quill: But Syndra has already written much about you in our correspondence. No need to be shy. {casual} Quill: Blessed, cursed... They're two sides of the same coin, in my eyes. I've seen my fair share of both in my time leading this group, heh heh... {explaining/casual} Quill: I see no reason not to celebrate differences, and what better difference could there be? {normal} Quill: ... Ah, we'll have more time to speak later. We'd best make our way down to the station, we can sort out arrangements there- {normal} Yuman: Hey, hey! We're leaving before we even get our introductions in? Why'd we even come here then, man? {casual} Yulie: Yes, Yuman, why did we come here? You're the one who dragged us all along. {slightly sarcastic} Yuman: Well, hey, I just thought this old man could use some help, that's all! Six people's a lot for one guy to greet, you know? {casual/slightly defensive} Quill: Yes, yes... Well, alright, since you all are here, we may as well handle introductions now. {casual} Yuman: I'm Yuman! I'm the greatest musician of our age, man! And I'm super muscular and cool, and- {excited/confident} Yulie: Alright, Yuman, that's enough. I'm Yulie, oldest of three. I work as a detective in Timasca. {slightly reprimanding, normal} Yuman: Booooring! Come on, bro, have some- {casual} Yusanu: And I'm Yusanu! I'm a mechanic. Quill's told us a lot about you, it's a pleasure to finally meet you. {friendly} Zeph: Uh... S- same, I guess. This is all s- st- still a bit new. {awkward} Rex: Eh, you'll get used to it. This place has a way of growing on you. {casual} Mora: Ah, if I may - I don't suppose you'd have anything prepared for us to be able to blend in better? I'd imagine we stick out a fair bit right now. {polite} Quill: Hm... I hadn't quite considered that. Boys, why don't you handle that while Syndra and I go ahead to sort out living arrangements? {thinking, casual} Yuman: Sir, yes sir! {serious} Syndra: Leaves, why don't you join them? It'll be a good opportunity to get to know each other. {normal} Sui: Um... I think I'd rather go with you. I'd like to rest a bit. {normal} Mora: ... Then I'll tag along as well. Perhaps I could be of use at the station! {energetic} Quill: Very well. Follow me, we have an access point this way. {normal} Yusanu: Well. I'm afraid I can't stay either... the station doesn't exactly run by itself. We'll have to catch up later! {energetic} Yuman: Ugh, boring as usual... Oh well! Yulie and I can show you around just fine by ourselves. {disapproving, friendly} Yulie: We should start with getting you all some new clothes. {normal} Zeph: Hey! Wh- what's wrong with our cur- current ones! {defensive} Yuman: They make you look like poor forest people, man! {honest} Yulie: Yuman! Don't be rude to our guests. {reprimanding} Yuman: What, I'm just saying! Am I wrong? {defensive} Zeph: Well! At l- lea- at least we don't smell bad! {positive} Rex: Alright, boys, settle down, play nice. You're both pretty. So, Yulie, what's the plan? {casual} Yulie: I'll have to swing by some shops... Yuman, in the meantime, why don't you see if you can find any clothes around here? {explaining} Rex: Great, I'll join you. I need to get re-acquainted with things around here. {normal} Yulie: Sure, that works. Any complaints, Yuman? {normal} Yuman: If I had 'em, you'd hear it loud and clear. The plan's good, bro. {casual} Yulie: Okay, we'll meet back at the Steel Feather once we're done. See you then! {normal} Yuman: ...Well! I've got a plan of my own in mind. Not exactly what Yulie had in mind, but... heh, what he doesn't know won't hurt him. Follow me, leaf people! {normal} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zeph: Hey! Hold- h- hold up! What's your p- p- plan? {slightly concerned} Yuman: Oh! Right. We're going to steal from the clotheslines, of course. {mater of fact} Zeph: ... I'm no stranger to st- stealing, but... isn't it a bit r- r-... a bit risky to do that in the m- middle of the city? {worried/concerned} Yuman: Man, haven't you noticed how empty Timasca is? {casual} // Why is that? Yuman: Figures you wouldn't know, since you're not from around here! It's pretty simple. {casual} Yuman: It's the middle of the workday! People are out at their jobs, they don't have time to stroll around the city! Got to make a living somehow, yeah? {normal} Zeph: A- and since they're out at their jobs, they're n- n- not home... you want us to just walk th- through someone's apartment, then? {questioning} Yuman: Yep, yep, exaaaactly! You get it. I think you and I are gonna get along great. {happy} Zeph: Yeah... sure. L- let- let's get going! I think we can rea- reach the rooftops from this house. We'll find some clothes up there. {proactive} // Oh... I hadn't noticed. Yuman: Ha! Really? You should... you should pay more attention, man. The moment you stop keeping an eye on things is the moment things go wrong, y'know? Jeez. {disbelief/lecturing} Yuman: What I was gonna say is that it's the middle of the workday. People are out at their jobs! No time to stroll around the city, or anything. {explaining} Zeph: A- and since they're out at their jobs, they're n- not home... you want us to just walk th- through someone's apartment, then? {questioning} Yuman: Mhm, yep, you get it. They won't mind! Cause they won't know we were there, yeah? {casual} Zeph: I- I- I guess. Okay, let's get going! I think we can rea- reach the rooftops from this house. We'll find some clothes up there. {uncertain/going along with it} Zeph: Try n-not to fall off the roof... {worried} Yuman: Here we are! Best clothes in the entire province, man! Take your pick! {casual} Zeph: ... Wait a mi- min- minute. There are only dr- dresses here? {confused} Yuman: Oh, yeah. My bad, man! Bet you could pull it off though, eh? {teasing} Zeph: I- y- you- wh- wh- what- h- huh? Ev- even- even if I could, Rex and Mora would- w- would never wear- wear these. A- and- and they're n- n- not- {disbelief} Yuman: Relax, I'm just messing with you, man! We'll find some more. But, hey, grab one if you want, yeah? {teasing/casual} Zeph: ... {unamused} Zeph: I'll take one for Sui, just in c- ca- just in case. And let's hurry after him. I'm getting sick a- and-... s- sick and tired of this place already. {normal} Zeph: It's g-going to be a long c-couple of days, huh? {normal} Yuman: Careful there, princess! Wouldn't want to fall, eh? {warning/slightly teasing} Zeph: Huh? I- I- I'm not- {embarrased} Yuman: Anyway, these clothes should work, yeah? Looks like enough for all of you! {normal} Zeph: ...yes, this sh- sh- should be fine. Thank you f- for showing us. Let's just grab them a- and go. {grateful} Yuman: Sounds good! You saw the big statue in the river when you were entering the city, yeah? {normal} Zeph: The one to the s- south- southwest, yes. {affirming} Yuman: That's the one! I'll wait for you there, then we can head to the station. And hurry up, would ya? {energetic} Zeph: Ugh... How can one guy be s- s- so annoying? {slightly tired} Zeph: Whatever... Let's just go to that s- st- statue. It's in the river t- to the southwest. {normal} Yuman: Ey, there you are! What's with the holdup? {friendly/casual} Yuman: I was just telling Zeph all about our base of operations! Here, I can start over if you- {friendly/explaining} Zeph: Let's just h- head in! Even if the city's empty, the longer we stay out here, the more we ri- risk getting seen. {urging} Yuman: Yeah, yeah, you're right. Okay, follow me! It's just down here. {relenting} Zeph: ... Into the s- s- sewers? {uncertain} Yuman: Sorry if our secret base isn't up to your high standards, princess! We've got to stay hidden somehow, eh? {slightly sarcastic} Zeph: Ugh... fine. {reluctant} Zeph: So... where are we? {normal} Yuman: Welcome to the station, man! There's a bunch of abandoned train lines down here. Dunno how we first found it, but it's where the Steel Feather operates. {explaining} Rex: Hey! Zeph, soldier, wait up! {calling out} Yulie: Good to see you've made it down here too. Yuman, you weren't rude to our guests, were you? {normal, skeptical} Yuman: What? Screw you, man, of course I was nice! When have I ever not been nice and kind and awesome? {defensive} Yulie: Well, either way, I'm sure you've tired them out by now. Let's go on ahead and give them time to catch up, alright? {normal} Yuman: Ugh, fiiiiiine. Later, you all! {relenting} Rex: So... how've you been finding Yuman so far? {inquiring} Zeph: Ugh. He's... f- fi- fine. We got the clothes, at least. {unenthusiastic} Rex: Hm. You don't sound fine. Spill. {skeptical} // Yuman's been teasing him. Rex: Oh, that's it? He's just like that. {casual} Zeph: He's just... very p- per- persistent. {aversed} Rex: Well, that says more about you than it does about him. Have you tried making it less easy for him? {casual/slightly teasing} Zeph: Ha ha. Very hel- hel- helpful, Rex. {slightly sarcastic} // I guess we're just tired. Rex: Makes sense, I guess. It's been a few days since we've been able to relax, hasn't it? {thinking} Zeph: Yeah... it'll be n- n- nice to slow down, for a while. {normal} Rex: Not sure how long we'll be slowed down... but sure. I think Syndra's got some plans in the works, but she hasn't shared them yet. {explaining} Rex: She's been getting... more ambitious lately. Soldier, I think having you around has had something to do with that. {explaining} Zeph: We- we- well, how about you? Is the Roughworks just how you r- remember it? {inquiring} Rex: Yeah... pretty much. Things don't tend to change a lot around here, so... it's just like slotting back into place. {explaining} Zeph: That must be nice. {normal} Rex: Ha. No, it really isn't. The few months I spent here before Quill sent me off to Syndra were... rough. {tired, explaining} Zeph: Oh... h- how come? You've never really talked about the R- R- Rough-... about the R- Roughworks. {curious} Rex: Uh... Hey, so about those clothes- let's take a look at what you got! {deflecting} Zeph: R- right... right! Well, here are th- the- the, uh, workers' clothes we got f- for me, Mora, and the soldier... And this is a dr- dress for Sui... {explaining} Zeph: And, of- of- of course, a simple dress for you! {awkward/helpful} Rex: Oh... that's funny, I don't think I've ever worn one of those! Hey, maybe I'll just take your set and you can wear the dress? {joking/serious} Zeph: Woah, ha, we- well, let's not g- g- get too hasty, haha- oh, l- look here, an extra set of re- reg- regular workers' clothes! What a c- co- coincidence! {nervous, scrambling} Zeph: ...don't, uh, m- m- make me wear the dress, please? {pleading, embarrassed} Rex: Yeah, yeah. Well, that's enough fooling around - we should find Mora and Sui, see what they've figured out. I'll race you there! {playful} Zeph: Hey! Oh, you're going d- down! {energized} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sui: ...Oh! You're back. {relieved} Mora: Indeed! Tell us, friends, how go the escapades? Has anything of interest transpired up in the city? {cheerful, inquiring} Rex: No, Mora, nothing very exciting. Yulie and I did a quick supply run in Timasca while we were there. {casual} Zeph: And the soldier and I found some cl- cl- clothes! They might not fit perfectly, but... {hopeful, slightly unsure} Mora: Ah, well, we'll take what we can get. Besides, I have to imagine they have someone around here who knows their way around modifying clothes! {optimistic} Mora: Speaking of, have you had time to explore this place yet? It's far larger than I could have anticipated! So many people with so many skillsets; Syndra wasn't lying when she said they had resources here, hoho! {excited} Sui: Yes... everyone chips in, too. I got put to work quite fast. Had an opportunity to chat with some of the people here. {normal} Sui: They, um... a lot of them don't have anywhere else to go... so they work hard to keep this place running. {explaining} Rex: ... Yeah. {thinking} Rex: Hey, do you know where Yusanu is? I haven't had the chance to catch up with him yet. {curious} Mora: Oh, he seemed to have disappeared into his study some time ago, though not before I could have a chat with him! Did you know he singlehandedly repaired much of the abandoned infrastructure here? {explaining/enthusiastic} Zeph: Really? That's... im- im- impressive. {genuine} Sui: Apparently, um, the crown was working on building this, central station, but they... abandoned the project, for, some reason. Nobody... really knows why. {explaining/uncertain} Zeph: Hm... so what are Syndra and Quill ta- talk- talking about over there? {curious} Mora: An excellent question! Nobody knows! Attempting to interject has only resulted in failure thus far. {amused} Sui: I mean... should we even interrupt? I haven't seen her this... happy... in a long time. {hesitant} Rex: It is a sweet moment, isn't it? {warm} Rex: Well, I nominate the soldier to go interrupt them. It needs to be done eventually. {decisive} // Huh? // Fine... Mora: Oh, yes, I second that notion. If it must be anyone, the soldier is the one to sacrifice for the cause. {playful} Zeph: Oh! Uh... sure, I'll... th- third it? That sounds right. {slightly awkward/amused} Sui: Um... I'll abstain. {unsure} Mora: Well! Three for, one against. It seems the decision has been made! {amused} // Traitors, all of you. Rex: Yeah, yeah! Come on, what are you waiting for? Go interrupt Syndra and Quill, and find out what they're talking about. {teasing} Mora: I will remember you fondly, my friend. {joking} Rex: Good luck on this mission, soldier. {mock-serious} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quill: Ah, soldier! I see you have all returned. Welcome to our home. {friendly} Quill: I hope the brothers weren't too much of a nuisance. Yuman, especially... he's a good lad, but he tends towards {fond, slightly amused} Syndra: Speaking of nuisances... I can't help but notice the rest of our group looking onwards at our conversation with excitement. {amused} // They sent me as a sacrifice to break up your chat. Syndra: Ah! Understood. A noble one, at that. {playful} Syndra: In any case, Quill and I have been trying to plan out our next moves... but, if I'm being honest, most of that time has been spent catching up. {explaining} Quill: Don't be fooled. All of these people here are resisting to some extent, but very few are ready to go up against a God. {serious} Quill: Hah! Goodness, how long has it been since we met face to face? It must have been... 25 years? Not since before you- {reminiscing} Syndra: Long enough, Quill. {firm} Quill: ...Ahem. Yes, of course. As Syndra said, we haven't truly started planning yet... You must be surprised by our numbers, yes? More members in the Steel Feather than you'd have expected. {composed} Quill: In truth, looks may be deceiving. Everyone here is resisting in whatever ways they can manage, but few are willing to put as much of themselves into it as your group. {explaining} Quill: Most of them are simply trying to live without the watchful eye of the monarchy. Our safe haven takes in people who are at risk. People who can't work, who have been thrown out of their homes... {somber} Quill: But we are not helpless. The brothers and I are all ready to help, however we can. And the rest of the Steel Feather will still offer support from the sidelines. We have infrastructure, and we have resources. {resolute} Syndra: I've also suggested that you might offer to teach the basics of magic to those who are interested- {normal} Quill: Yes, yes, but I do not believe we need curses or blessings to resist. As I've told you several times before in our correspondences, Syndra! {firm} Syndra: And as I've told you in response, I see no reason not to make use of all the tools available! {assertive} Quill: Syndra, I have been firm on this point for a reason. We have done well for ourselves thus far. {calm, insistent} Quill: As an example- Yusanu has grown quite proficient with machinery. He has constructed weaponry, tools- even my leg is his creation! {proud} Syndra: ... I simply think that-... Sigh. Fine. Quill, we should get to discussing the reason we came here. {conceding} Quill: Yes, I rather think we should. Soldier, in the meantime, why don't you take a look around the station? Familiarize yourself with the area and the people. {suggesting} Quill: Take a look around the station! Familiarize yourself with the area and the people. {encouraging} Mora: Hoho! So they return! Tell us, how did it go? {cheerful, curious} // I died. She killed me. Rex: Oh, no... what a tragedy. {deadpan, sarcastic} Mora: Ah, we all knew the stakes going in! Worry not, friend, your sacrifice will not be forgotten any time soon! {playful} Zeph: Hey! E- e- enough with the theatrics! {slightly more serious} // No casualties to report! Mora: Excellent! You have successfully defied the odds, friend! {pleased} Sui: Zeph didn't believe you'd make it, you know. {playful/slightly teasing} Zeph: Wh- what, n- no I- I didn't- Sui!! D- don't- don't believe a word- a word she says, o- okay? {embarrassed} Zeph: Wh- what were they talking about, anyway? {dismissing/curious} // They were just catching up, apparently. Rex: Oh, so it was as boring as I predicted. {dismissive} Sui: Don't call that boring, Rex! It's... nice for her to relax for a little, isn't it? {defending} Mora: It can be both boring and a nice thing, can it not? The nice things often tend towards the boring end of the spectrum, in any case. {thinking} Zeph: So, still n- nothing about the plans... when is she go- go- going to tell us anything? {impatient} Mora: Have patience, young Leaf. She will tell us when it is time! Now, Sui and I have had the opportunity to explore, but you three have not! So, go on! Look around, talk to people. {reassuring, encouraging} Mora: Go have a look around! {cheerful} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Syndra: ...and she's well? No changes? {concerned, quiet} Quill: Nothing beyond what I'd written in our letters {reassuring, calm} Syndra: Alright... thank you, Quill. Just a little longer, then I- {relieved} Quill: Ah, soldier! What do you think of our home? It took a great deal of planning to get the station up and running, but I feel we've done a good- {friendly} Jiro: Quill! {urgent} Quill: Jiro? What's the matter? {alert} Jiro: I overheard... an altercation... between a woma-... and a- ...dier... {breathless, struggling} Quill: Calm yourself, Jiro. Take a breath, and repeat {serious} Jiro: A woman is being kicked out... again! I don't know the details, but I think she didn't reach her quota for the month. {urgent, distressed} Quill: Urgh... Where?! {frustrated, urgent} Jiro: Living Block 72 - through the southwestern tunnel. {serious, quick} Quill: Yusa- {calling out} Yusanu: Got it. YUMAN! YULIE! {immediate} Zeph: Wh- what- what's going on? {confused, anxious} Yusanu: We're heading out. Rescue mission. Yuman, where's Yulie? {serious} Yuman: He has a meeting in the city today, remember? He told all of us this morning. {casual, reminding} Yusanu: ...Right. Right, he did say- alright. We'll have to go in blind, then. Not ideal, but it can't be helped- {thinking, tense} Yusanu: Damn it! Not now, of all times to- {frustrated} Syndra: What's going on? Is something wrong? {concerned} Yusanu: No, no, nothing's- it's nothing bad... I hope. I just need to... check what triggered the alarm. Ugh, can anything go right today... {stressed} Yuman: Hey, bro, don't worry about it. I'll handle it! You take care of whatever you need to, 'kay? {reassuring} Yusanu: ...Okay. Okay, thanks, Yuman. I owe you one. {relieved} Yuman: Hey, one of these days I'll collect on all those ones you owe me! Don't think you can dodge that just cause you're my bro! {playful} Zeph: Will you n- ne- need help? The soldier and I can join if y- if you need us. {eager, nervous} Yuman: Was just about to ask the same thing! Jiro, Zeph, soldier, you all listen to my orders 'till this is sorted! Got it? {commanding} Zeph: Understood. {serious} Yuman: You forgot the ''sir'' at the end, there! Anyway, let me grab my guitar, and let's head out! {teasing} Zeph: G- g- guitar? What... {confused} Jiro: Don't ask, you'll find out later. We need to get moving now. {serious} Zeph: Right! Soldier, let's g- g- go! {determined} Syndra: I hope they'll be fine. {concerned} Quill: I hope Yuman doesn't annoy them to death... {slightly amused} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zeph: There might be guards around... {warning/cautious} Zeph: Th- through here! Yuman and Jiro are s- sc- scouting up ahead. {explaining} Zeph: I hope she'll be o- o- okay... {worried} Zeph: I see them up a- a- ahead... Let's join up with them. Fo- follow me! {urgent} Yuman: Hush! Keep it down, man! {whispering} Timasca Soldier: Alright, lady! Time's up! It's time to get going. {authoritative} Timasca Soldier: We need to clean up this filthy apartment of yours for whoever's next in line. We've got a tight schedule, so don't make this harder than it needs to be, alright? {condescending} Aihan: W-w-wait! I still need to pack! You haven't given me enough time! {panicked} Timasca Soldier: You received an eviction notice last night, detailing the protocol, didn't you? You've had plenty of time already, lady. {cold} Timasca Soldier: Unless what you mean to say is you take issue with the system? We've got a formal complaints department, lady, but I don't think you'd enjoy paying them a visit. {threatening} Aihan: N-n-no! No, it- it's fine! I-I-I just- I'm just saying th-that- I just need a couple of minutes... Please! {desperate/scared} Timasca Soldier: Sigh. I did warn you, lady. Guess we're doing things the hard way, then. {impatient} Aihan: N-no... I- I'm sorry! {fearful} Aihan: I'm sorry! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm- {panicked} Timasca Soldier: Disrespecting the crown is a serious crime, y'know. Alright, boys, you know what to do. {cold, commanding} Zeph: Hey! We n- ne- need to hel- help her! {urgent, distressed} Yuman: Quiet! It's not protocol, we need to wait until the coast's clear, or else- {hushed, tense} Zeph: But th- they're going to beat her! We c- can- we c- can't just let that- {emotional} Jiro: You're new here, so you get a pass for not knowing, but we cannot draw attention towards us. {firm} Yuman: Yeah, man! If the guards get a whiff of what we're doing, we're toast! The only reason we have the station is 'cause they don't know about it! {serious, warning} Zeph: M- m- maybe hiding is enough f- f- for you, but I c- ca- can't just let someone get h- hur- hurt! {frustrated, emotional} Zeph: S- so-... so sc- screw your cover! She n- n- needs help, so I- I'm going to h- he- help! {defiant, determined} Yuman: Hey, don't!-... Damn it. Man, how am I gonna explain this to... {frustrated} Yuman: Fine, man! Can't just let you fight alone, can we? Let's just get this over with... {resigned} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zeph: ..Okay. I th- th- I think the coast is clear. She sh- sh- should be- {catching breath, cautious} Jiro: What the hell was that? What were you thinking?! {angry, incredulous} Yuman: Jiro, man, not now. {firm} Jiro: No, I really think I should- {insistent} Yuman: Jiro. We've got other things to worry about, man. Cool it till we're back at the station, 'kay? {serious} Jiro: ... {tense} Yuman: ...Aihan? Are you there? {careful, concerned} Aihan: Wh-who are you people? What are- what are you doing here? {fearful} Yuman: You don't know us, and we don't know you. But we're here to help. I'm Yuman, and these are- {reassuring} Aihan: Why... why would you... help me...? {distrustful} Yuman: 'Cause... that's what people like us should do. {earnest} Aihan: No! N-n-no... people like us should just do as we're told and not get involved in things that aren't ours! {defensive} Yuman: Aihan... we can- {gentle} Aihan: If I just follow orders, at least I'll survive! I might lose my apartment, and maybe everything I've built for myself, and all the things I've managed to keep for myself, but- but- but at least I'll be alive! {desperate} Yuman: ...I hear you. Trust me, Aihan, I really do. {soft, empathetic} Yuman: Can I tell you a story? {calm, grounding} Aihan: ...okay {hesitant} Yuman: Long, long ago, when I was just a little kid, I lost my ma. Dad's out of the picture, so... my bros had to put in the work to take care of me, even though they were just kids too. {reflecting} Yuman: But, y'know, being kids... they couldn't do enough. Failed to meet their quotas, just like you. Got kicked out, had to live on the streets. {somber} Yuman: You want to know the reason we made it through that? It was 'cause someone reached out a helping hand. Gave us a place to stay, to work without the threat of not meeting expectations. To live, man. {earnest} Yuman: So... please. Accept the hand that's offered to you, 'kay? You can come with us and talk to the boss, and if what we have isn't enough for you... no one will force you to stay. But give it a try, please? {sincere} Aihan: I... I... {overwhelmed} Jiro: Not to ruin the moment, Yuman, but we've got more soldiers coming our way! We've got to get moving soon! {urgent} Yuman: Damn... alright. Aihan, will you trust me? {urgent, hopeful} Aihan: I... okay. I'll... I'll try. {nervous, unsure} Yuman: Okay... okay. Thank you. Soldier, could you help her pack her stuff? Zeph, Jiro, help me prepare an escape route. {focused} Aihan: W-wait! I... I don't know what I'm packing! {panicked} Yuman: Right. Uh... don't bring anything heavy. We have food and cookware where we're going... {thinking} Yuman: Bring something to sleep with, something that reminds you of home... and maybe some form of entertainment, if you've got any. {thinking} Yuman: Soldier, I'm counting on you, alright? {normal} Aihan: I... I can't think straight... this is all moving so fast... please- please, can you help me? {overwhelmed} Aihan: Grab that backpack and... pick whatever you think works... {desperate} Aihan: We have to hurry but I just can't think! {panicked} Aihan: Did you get everything? Can we go? {anxious} Aihan: Alright, but hurry! Please! I can hear soldiers. {urgent, fearful} Aihan: Okay... No one's here yet. Let's go! {relieved/tense} Aihan: You- you didn't find any clothing? I can't leave with- with only one set of clothes! I know I have a shirt somewhere... {worried} Aihan: There's... nothing to sleep with in- in here. You couldn't f-find a pillow or blanket? I'd e-even take a mattress... {distressed} Aihan: I'm going to be away for so long, I need something to entertain myself. Perhaps a Book or a Deck of Cards? {anxious, rambling} Aihan: ...As much as this little place is- is run down, it's... it's home. I can't just leave- I can't. I can't go without... without something to remember it by. Please, please, find my ring or my photograph. Please. {emotional, attached} Aihan: We- no, no, no, this- this won't work, I can't- you need to pack different things, I can't go with- with this, plea {overwhelmed, emotional} Timasca Soldier: Halt! You're all under arrest! {authoritative} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aihan: Where- where are you going? D-d-don't leave me here! {panicked} Zeph: Soldier, h- h- hurry! We don't have m- mu- much time! {urgent} Aihan: Woah... wh-what did you pick into this? This- this is too heavy, I- I- I can't carry all of it! {overwhelmed} *Is 'pick' meant to be 'pack'?* Aihan: Why... did you take these? He- the young man said you had f-food, water, and cooking equipment, r-right? {confused/concerned} Aihan: Wh-what?! H-how did you fit my whole m-mattress in here? Was... was there not anything smaller? {shocked} Aihan: This... okay. Okay. This is enough. I can-... this will work. It has the- the important things. We can go, now. {resolved, nervous} Yuman: Hey! You guys done?! {calling out} Yuman: We're out of time, we have to get moving! Come on, come on! {urgent} Yuman: Up the ladder, into the tunnel! Go, go, go! {rushing/urging} Zeph: Yuman... c- co- come on. Let's go. {urgent} Yuman: Mind giving me a hand? {strained} Zeph: Get to c- cl- climbing. {focused} Yuman: Man... that was a really stupid thing for you to do. Like, astronomically stupid, yeah? {lecturing} Zeph: ...I'm- {guilty} Yuman: But I get it. I get it, y'know? If I didn't have to be a leader there, I'd've probably done the same thing! {understanding} Yuman: Difference is, my bros can hold me back from that impulse. Guess I wasn't able to do that, here... {reflecting} Yuman: Hate to disappoint 'em, y'know? Bit late now, though. What's done is done, can't take it back. {resigned} Yuman: It'll be alright. Worse things've happened. Aihan's safe, that's all that matters! We'll deal with the rest as it comes. {reassuring} Zeph: I- I should've... I should've l-lis- listened to you. But, s- s- seeing the way they- they were treating her... I was j- j- just so... angry. How dare th- they look down on p- p- people like that?! {frustrated/angry, emotional} Yuman: Yeah... I hear you. Hear you loud and clear. It's not right, is it? But that's what we're working to fix down here, man. Gotta do what little you can, yeah? {calm} Yuman: Let's get going. They'll be expecting us. Wouldn't want to keep 'em waiting. {informing} Zeph: ...We should f- f- follow them in. {quiet, composed} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zeph: Hey... wh- where- where's Aihan? {concerned} Yuman: Jiro and I got her settled. Quill's giving her the rundown as we speak. {reassuring} Yuman: You should... probably avoid Jiro for now, yeah? He's not exactly... happy. {warning} Zeph: Right... Got it. So- s- so... how does it wor- work now? Should we re- record this mission s- somewhere? {uncertain} Yuman: Yep, yep! Normally I'd go to Quill, but he's busy. Let's see if we can find Yusanu first- he'll... understand. Probably. More than Yulie, at least. I trust him to keep it quiet for now, at least... y'know? {thinking} Zeph: Sure. Le- lead the way. {agreeing} Yulie: Yuman, I swear. Yusanu should know better than to let you take the lead on these sorts of things! What were you thinking? {frustrated} Yuman: Woah, woah, woah! That's a lot of accusations out of nowhere, bro! What gives? {defensive} Yulie: What gives? You know what gives- a whole squadron of housing enforcers turns up dead on the job, and you expect that to go over quietly? {angry} Yuman: Ahhh. That. Well, you know how it is. Things happen, right? {dismissive/casual} Yulie: You-... at least pretend to take this seriously, would you? Of all people, you should know what this is going to lead to. {stern} Zeph: It- it was- was- it wasn't his f- f- fault, I- {defensive/slightly nervous} Yuman: Hey, princess, it's alright. Don't need you to cover for me, 'kay? {reassuring} Yuman: So what's the plan then, Yulie? Meeting to talk about it, as always? {casual} Yulie: Sigh... as soon as Quill gets Aihan sorted, yes. It shouldn't take long, so everyone's gathered in advance. {resigned} Rex: Hey! What happened out there? Everyone's acting weird about it. {curious} Zeph: We ended up f- fight- fighting some soldiers to save the w- w- the woman we went there for... {uneasy} Rex: Huh. Is that all? I thought it'd be way worse. {dismissive} Zeph: Yeah... they- th- they're worried about it dr- draw- drawing attention... {explaining} Zeph: Uh... wh- where's Sui? {inquiring} Mora: Still helping out in the kitchen, preparing for dinner! Worry not, I will catch her up once the meeting concludes. {cheerful} Quill: Ah, hello everybody. Apologies for the delay. {formal} Yuman: Will... will Aihan be staying? {concerned} Quill: She hasn't quite decided yet, but she has agreed to stay the night. She's in a bad state of mind, the poor woman. Some rest will do her good. {gentle/explaining} Quill: But that leads us well to the reason this meeting was called. The retrieval process went... poorly, I take it? {serious} Yulie: Poorly is an understatement. The military is on high alert now! Everyone entering or leaving Timasca this evening was questioned- if I hadn't used our tunnel, I'd still be stuck in line there! {frustrated} Yulie: This is an unmitigated disaster. Yuman, what do you have to say for yourself? You should know better by now, we need to- {angry} Zeph: H- hey! It- it- it's not- it's n- not his f- f- fault! I'm the- the one who- {defensive} Yuman: Nah, the blame falls on me. I was the leader, so anything that happened is my responsibility. I should've... been more firm about it. {accepting, regretful} Yusanu: None of this would have happened if I'd been there... damn it. The timing couldn't have been worse. This is all my- {frustrated, self-blaming} Rex: Okay, that's enough. You're all acting stupid! Who cares whose fault it was? Either way, it already happened, so let's figure out what we're going to do about it. {firm} Yulie: But- {frustrated} Rex: And I'm not done! You're all acting like it's the end of the world that some soldiers are dead. So what? Soldiers die all the time. {firm} Yulie: They don't die like this, though. We don't have the luxury of being able to wave off the crown's attention! If they find out what we're doing down here, we're done for. {urgent, defensive} Rex: But they haven't found out yet, have they? You have options still. For example- you're on the detective force! If suspicions arise, couldn't you just lead them elsewhere? {arguing} Rex: Besides. If staying hidden means having to look away as innocent people get harmed- what kind of a resistance does that make you? What's the point of any of it? {challenging} Syndra: Rex... take care with your words. Don't say anything you'll- {warning} Yulie: What's the point? The point is all the people we already have down here who we need to protect! Quill, please, back me up here. {frustrated, appealing} Quill: ... No, Yulie, Rex has a point. Even if it was phrased harshly... we have been rather passive in our battle thus far. We've let people get hurt, even if only for the sake of our safety. {calm} Quill: We have had our reasons... and we have done good work, to the best of our ability. But if we are afraid to act, how will anything ever change for the better? {thoughtful, resolute} Yulie: ... {quiet, conflicted} Quill: You are not wrong to feel frustration, Yulie. I, too, wish this had been handled with more care... but something like this was bound to happen eventually. We will survive this, as we have survived other hardships before. {reassuring} Yulie: I... suppose. {reluctant, conceding} Quill: ...But let's lighten the mood a little! Dinner should almost be ready. Yuman, you told me earlier today you were working on a new song. Would you still like to perform it tonight? {uplifting, redirecting} Yuman: Huh? Oh, yeah, yeah man! I can do that, for sure. {casual} Mora: Ahem. Before we depart, if I may- while we are all gathered here, I believe it could be beneficial to lay out some relevant information. {polite} Mora: Most of us are new to the Roughworks, so getting to know the lay of the land could help. {explaining} Syndra: Right, of course. I'd been meaning to suggest something similar earlier, before... this situation came up. {agreeing, thinking} Quill: Certainly, we could do that! What would you like to know? {friendly} Quill: Ah, yes. Her name is Soosu. It's hard to say much about her... she's rather reclusive, staying cooped up in her mansion, working away. {explaining} Syndra: She's the opposite of Zhiraok, in that way. Ideally, we'll avoid drawing her attention. We'll have plenty to worry about already without adding her to the list. {serious} Yusanu: That'd be for the best, yeah. She's... kind of a genius. She singlehandedly brought forth the Industrial Age, over a century ago! Most of the machinery you see in Fruma probably traces its origin back to her in some way. {explaining} Yuman: Ha! Yeah, yeah, figures you'd know all that, bro. Nerd. {teasing} Yusanu: Wh- that's just written history, Yuman. If you're going to make fun of me, at least do it right. {defensive} Rex: How about her blessing? If we do run into her, we'll want to know what to watch out for. {serious} Quill: I don't know the specifics... but what I do know is that it allows her to mold matter at will. To what extent, or with what limits... hard to say. Still, that uncertainty is dangerous. Be careful. {serious, cautioning} Quill: Very well! Then let us adjourn for dinner. {normal} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sui: Oh, soldier! I feel like I've barely seen you around here... {normal} Sui: I, um... Mora told me about what happened. On your mission. I'm... glad you were able to help that woman. {sincere} Sui: I, ha, kind of wish I could've been there, to help. Though, I don't... really know what I could have done, there. {self-conscious} Sui: S-so maybe it's a good thing! That I've been, um, busy, cooking. For the Steel Feather. There's, ha, a lot of people here! {nervous, upbeat} Sui: But I've been learning new recipes, and getting to know new people! Oh, right, you're probably here for, um, the food. Here! Please have some. {cheerful} Sui: ...oh, hi! Are you here for some food? {welcoming} Aihan: Ah, n-no, I- well, yes, I'd love some food, but I'm here to- to thank the soldier. {nervous, earnest} // It was the least we could do. Aihan: Don't- don't sell yourself short! I don't... f-fully understand yet, but, fighting the guards like... like that is dangerous, and- and I know why some people wouldn't want to... {insistent, emotional} Aihan: But you did anyway, and- and- and it means a lot. {grateful} Sui: It, um, sounds like it was a really bad situation. So I'm glad you got out alright. {gentle} Aihan: H-ha... yes. They've been... p-pushy before, but they've never been this- this- this, ah, violent. {uneasy} Aihan: Ha... it's k-kind of ridiculous, looking back. Stupid- s-stupid quotas... ouch... {awkward, pained} // Are you settling in okay? Aihan: Y-yes, I am. It's... new, and- and different, but everyone here has been so kind, and... {appreciative} Aihan: It's a little- a little strange... It almost feels like- like- like I don't deserve it! Because, I- I- I haven't... w-worked for it. {insecure, conflicted} Sui: Um... I don't really, know, what it's like to live here... but where I'm from, people help each other. You shouldn't have to earn the right to live. {sincere} Aihan: Y-you must be from a much n-nice place than- than here. {wistful} Sui: Aihan! Are you okay? {concerned} Aihan: Oh, it- it's... nothing. Just, heavy m-machinery. Hurt my shoulder when- when I went in. It- it's r-really my fault, I, I, I sh-should have been m-more careful... {dismissive, self-blaming} Sui: Um... I- I can, ha, I can help you. {hesitant} Aihan: You... you can? H-how? {uncertain} Sui: Just... sigh. Follow me, and- and trust me. {nervous, reassuring} Aihan: Uh... {uncertain} Aihan: H-hey... {nervous} Aihan: H-hey! I- I only have this shirt, I c- I can't- I- {flustered, embarrassed} Aihan: ...huh? My- my shoulder? {surprised} Sui: Are you... feeling better? {hopeful} Aihan: How did- how did you do that? {shocked} Sui: I'm... I'm cursed. That's how. {quiet} Aihan: ...oh. {processing} Aihan: I-... th-thank you. I didn't... I didn't know cursed ones could be- could be nice. {awkward, apologetic} Aihan: Um... I sh-should go. Thank you for- for the food, and- and- and for... healing my shoulder. I- I really appreciate it. {grateful, nervous} // That was kind of you. Sui: Yeah... {soft} // It could have gone worse! Sui: I- I guess so! Ha... at least she, um, wasn't scared. Just... nervous. {awkward} Sui: It's- fine. It's what I expected. I'm... glad I could help. {bittersweet} // Yuman's performance should start soon. Sui: I'll, um, catch up with the rest of you, later. {gentle} Sui: Go join the others. Uh, I'll join you in a bit. {reassuring} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Syndra: Soldier, it's nice of you to join us. Have you had dinner yet? {welcoming} // I haven't Syndra: It's good, isn't it? Quill tells me she's managed to fit right in with the other cooks here. {pleased, approving} Zeph: So, soldier, are you also w- wait- waiting for Yuman's performance? {inquring} // I am. Mora: I have heard great things about his musical talents! Though, ah, I have also heard this his variety, ah, leaves something to be desired. {polite} // Oh, I forgot about that. Mora: Then worry not, for you have been reminded just now, hoho! {playful} Rex: Hey, maybe he's written a song about you, Zeph! {teasing} Zeph: Wh- wh- what?! R- Rex, no h- he-... that's n- not-... wh- why would he ev- even- {flustered, embarrassed} Rex: Ha! Relax, relax, I'm just teasing ya. {amused, casual} Syndra: Yuman's performance is about to start. You should grab a bite from Sui! {encouraging} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quill: Ahem... Attention, attention! Everyone, gather around! {announcing} Quill: I am heartened to see so many of you joining us for dinner today. It feels as though it has been a while since we've had such a large attendance! {pleased} Quill: There is of course news to deliver... but first! We begin by thanking our cooks for the meal. {appreciative} Quill: We're all familiar with Fletch's talents, but dinner wouldn't have been possible without the help of one of our new arrivals: Sui! {proud, encouraging} Sui: Oh...! It, ha, it- um. It was nothing. T'was my pleasure! To- to help. {flustered, shy, happy} Quill: No need to be shy, my dear! {gentle, reassuring} Quill: Dinner aside, let's get to the announcements! {focused} Quill: Today, we have had not one, but seven new arrivals! In addition to Sui, please welcome Aihan, Mora, Rex, Zeph, the soldier, and Syndra! {welcoming} Quill: Now, I'm certain news has spread of our... altercation, shall we say, with the crown's military. I assure you, all is under control! The Steel Feather remains secure and hidden. {calm, reassuring, firm} Quill: It does mean expeditions out of the station will be at higher risk for a time. We will have updated guidelines available in the morning for those of you who volunteer. {serious} Quill: But in lighter news, we have restocked candy bars and sodas at the ticket shops! Make sure to trade for some before they run out - remember the rules, one of each per person. {lighthearted, informing} Quill: Well then! Barring any surprises at this very moment, that is all for today's report. As he has volunteered himself today, I will hand over the stage to Yuman. {formal} Yuman: Heeeeeelllllooooo people of the Steel Feather! {energetic} Yuman: Good to see you all as always- ey, Taio, lookin' good! Mei, love what you've done with the hair! Jin, my man! {friendly, playful} Yuman: Ah... I guess I can introduce my song. It's a new one! You guys won't be able to tease me for being an artist with only one song anymore, haha! {confident} Yuman: I've been working on this one for a while. Never could find a way to end it, though... 'till now, that is. Finally managed to find some inspiration. {thoughtful, proud} Yuman: Well, enough talking from me. Here it goes! {excited} -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ???: Hm hm hm! Look who it is! // Soosu {playful, amused} Sovereign Zhiraok: Long time no see, Soosu. {cool} Sovereign Zhiraok: Happy to see you again, Flowers. {calm} Sovereign Zhiraok: You need to subtract some of this security. It shouldn't need to take twenty minutes to get through just the gate. We need to talk, an hour ago. {impatient, authoritative} Sovereign Soosu: Wow, mister loudmouth, big words for someone who wasn't supposed to be here for a few more weeks! What gives?! You're interrupting my flow! {annoyed, dramatic} Sovereign Zhiraok: Your sche- Are you taking lessons from Oru? This provincial emergency has a much greater value than your charter, Sovereign, so I'm summing to the equati- nnh. {irritated, lecturing, strained} Sovereign Zhiraok: I've changed my schedule to come here early and track down a defector- Syndra, and her set of insurgents. You've heard the name, right? {serious, probing}
